Exhibition explores the history of Boardshort

With Hawaii as birthplace of surfing, is no wonder that the Short boardshort became the unofficial uniform. And there is much more to the popular bathing trunks we see on our beaches today. In fact, the Museum of Art of Honolulu explores its evolution from a simple cotton clothing to a piece of high-tech sportswear.

Honolulu Museum of Art Boardshorts Exhibit

An art exhibition dedicated to unofficial uniform of Hawaii - boardshorts.

"Boardshorts: a perfect fit" tells the story of boardshorts with the insight of the world surf legends and surfshort design pioneers, as well as intense digging in the archives and careful of the local thrift stores. Curators met not only with the legends of surf, but they have borrowed pieces of swimwear and Board them as well. This particular collection of the Board of Directors and swimwear comes from guys and girls of yesterday and today: Eddie Aikau, Lisa Anderson, Gerry Lopez, Carissa Moore, Kelly Slater and Rell Sun.

The first Hawaii surf trunk made his debut in the 1950s as a garment tailored to the user. According to the Museum, locations popular for a pair of trunks back then included h. Miura Hale'iwa store, take s at Waikiki and Mr. Nii?s in Makaha. First of all, it is all about comfort; as a result, previous shorts were made with cotton serge. Today, however, it is at high performance (fast drying). Short films are now driven by a need for speed, comfort, flexibility and sustainability with regard to the often unforgiving surf. Also, not to mention what they used to be called: swimwear, bun huggers, bags, boardies and jams.
