What is the island?

This is a common question by visitors and residents the same; What exactly is the "great island"? After all, it must be quite significant to earn a name like that? With more than 4 000 square miles of land, the island is twice the size of other islands, combined with the replacement part. It is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined!

Big Island Hawaii

A well deserved name, I would say. Not to mention, it is still growing. Thanks to Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world, land continues to be added to the already "large" island with each hardened lava flow. Scientists predict that the submarine volcano of only 15 kilometres southeast of the Big Island will finally reach level of the sea and the merger with the island. Larue, as it was named, is currently eruption under the Pacific ocean, and will not until another of the hundreds of thousands of years before that happens.

The island is filled with beaches, volcanoes and reefs. In fact, it is home to 11 of the 13 areas of the Earth's climate. And since it is the youngest island in the Hawaiian chain, it is still much cultural sites still in tact today. People can not go back in time, when visiting these sites and explore the living history at hand. There is no way to see everything in a day, however; It is just as BIG.

Some don't realize that the "main island" is actually a nickname. His real name is the island of Hawaii ' I. I guess that people confused since Hawaii is the name of the entire state - all the eight Hawaiian Islands. Sometimes, the island is called the "Orchid Island" because of the 100,000 species of orchids that grow it or the "volcano island" which is not too far from the truth. After all, he sat on an active volcano. But the Big Island is the name that stuck in describing one of the most amazing gems of the Earth.
